Strata House
In collaboration with: Lauren Robinson, Kristelle Modesto, Ricardo Wong, Alan Armenta

Strata House in Tempe Town Lake celebrates connection and growth by embodying the coming together of individuals into a place where nature and community are integrated into one; just like roots intertwine and give support to create a thriving ecosystem. At its core, the boathouse features a water garden that ‘flows’ into the structure and flourishes into a distinctive cholla-inspired set of columns that gives stability to the boathouse.
With a focus on the refined materiality of timber and textile. Our project, The Strata House, is inspired by the Latin word for "many layers." This concept of layering is reflected not only in the physical materials—timber and textile—but also in the deeper connections between the site, community, and environment.
In the conceptual stage, we start with the experimentation of materiality and recreate an element of our building in a live scale. This model reflects our research on wood bending and kerfing patterns.
These diagrams capture the conceptual foundation of our project, incorporating elements such as the cholla cactus, the sense of community, and the landscape of our site.
Addressing one of the weakness of our site, which is poor water quality, we are implementing a water garden that also improves water quality. This is done by the selection of the plant species.
